I dont write the way you do, or at least probably not. Thanks to big tech sometimes guessing my interests correctly, in the past ive been served social media content along the lines of 'this is my writing process'. It always made me feel inadequate, not because the people who make these videos write better stories than I do (they might, who knows), but because my process looks absolutely nothing like that.
These writing process guides often list many different text editor options, and vault and file structure programs to manage the lore and stuff. There is nothing wrong with this of course, if it works for people they should use it. Some people create with paint, some with charcoal. We arent all the same.
Me on the otherhand, I like to build from an idea outwards and start writing immediately. I have a folder on my computer with all my ideas for stories in it. They might be a fairly in depth synopsis pitch, a whole chapter, or just one scene or character and if I like it the whole story builds out from there. I like to write as a reader, because I *am* a reader. I live for the feeling a good story gives you when it forces your imagination to put you right there, makes you feel the moment or picture the environment in a way that gives you that endorphin rush that all readers get from a good story. That page turning feeling.
That is the way I see writing, something that has the potential to be one of those moments pops into my head and it goes down on the keyboard and the whole thing spirals from there. This however also means I dont write in a linear way. Some writers sit themselves at their desk for a predetermined amount of time every day and they write until that time has passed, then they stop. That is amazing to me, and if any of you out there are that kind of writer please get in touch, I'd love to pick your brain.
I write when the bolt hits, this isn't as inefficent as it might first sound. I love writing, so the bolt hits often. Some days are a few pages, others can be ten thousand words or more. But on balance I am happy with my approach, it keeps me feeling like a reader while I write. I'm old enough that as a child I read actual paper books. These were often read at night with a torch my parents didn't know I had. I read in the day too, but if it was a page turner the torch was on way past bedtime. On the best days writing feels like that, it feels like reading a story you would love yourself, and if you like it others will too.
